Why buying local is better by miles!

  1. Support the local economy: more money spent locally will help countless local businesses down the line.
  2. Support local farmers: cutting out the middle-men means that farmers get a fair price for their produce.
  3. Reduce food miles: by buying form a local farm shop you can help reduce the carbon dioxide emissions associated with distribution by 99.8%.
  4. Reduce waste: some food is rejected by supermarkets simply because it is the wrong shape despite being perfectly good food!
  5. Buying direct from the farm is an education: you can talk to the farmer and ask questions about how the food was grown or reared, they are always happy to answer.
  6. Get in touch with the seasons: buy seasonal item for some of the tastiest fruit and vegetables you can eat.
  7. Reduce packaging: by buying direct from a producer you are helping to reduce the tonnes of plastic and cardboard used to protect the food during transit.
  8. Traceability: if the farmer produces it and then sells it either direct from the farm or at a farmers market you get to know exactly where your food comes from and will be able to ask him (or her) questions about methods of production, breeds and varieties used etc.
  9. Get involved in food production: farmers who sell direct to the public are able to get feedback from customers about their product and can easily tailor production to meet demand. Let them know what you want and if it’s possible they will do their best to help.
  10. Meet some very nice people!
